Data is increasingly recognized as a crucial tool for attaining digital economic dominance by generating new industrial value and facilitating digital transformation throughout society and the economy. It serves as the foundation for achieving digital economic leadership and promoting change across all sectors, especially in AI development. Africa’s AI ambitions are supported by concrete policies and increasing investments. At least fifteen African countries have adopted national AI strategies, while five more have drafted or are in the process of developing theirs. The continent’s policy framework, led by the African Union's Continental AI Strategy released in 2024, highlights seven key areas: talent development, data infrastructure, computational resources, market development, investment mechanisms, governance, and institutional cooperation.


Beyond this, recent commitments from global actors underscore confidence in Africa’s AI potential: the UAE pledged $1 billion specifically for African AI infrastructure and services at the G20 Leaders' Summit in November 2025, Google committed $2.25 million to modernize Africa's public data infrastructure for the AI age, and Microsoft, Amazon, and other technology giants are expanding computing capacity and high-performance computing facilities across leading African markets. The venture capital sector further validates these prospects, with tech-enabled startups across Africa attracting surging investment volumes.


Leading African nations, particularly Kenya, Nigeria, Egypt, Morrocco, and South Africa are demonstrating tangible AI applications in agriculture, healthcare, financial services, and public administration, indicating that AI adoption is transitioning from policy statements to operational deployment. Kenya’s integration of AI into its mobile-first economy and fintech sector, and Nigeria's establishment of a National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics all
